28 07 2008

TRANSMEDIALE.09 AWARD COMPETITION

Transmediale and Club Transmediale are calling for submissions to the Transmediale Award competition and the Vilem Flusser Theory Award.

Transmediale.09 – DEEP NORTH
Festival for art and digital culture

*Transmediale* presents and pursues the advancement of artistic positions reflecting on the socio-cultural, political and economic impact of new technologies. It seeks out artistic practices that not only respond to scientific or technical developments, but that try to shape the way in which we think about and experience the technologies which impact virtually all aspects of our daily lives. Transmediale.09 – *DEEP NORTH* peers beyond the evolving alarmist scenarios of the often global warming debate and shifts this focus to the global artistic, cultural, societal and philosophical consequences that the presumed imminent collapse of the polar ice barrier may trigger.
27 January – 1 February 2009

Club Transmediale.09 – STRUCTURES
Festival for adventurous music and related visual arts

*Club Transmediale* (CTM) is a prominent international festival dedicated to contemporary electronic, digital and experimental music, as well as the diverse range of artistic activities in the context of sound and club culture. CTM presents projects that experiment with new aesthetic parameters and new forms of cooperation, develop possibilities for informational and economic self-determination, and reflect on the role of contemporary music against the backdrop of technological and social transformations.

With *STRUCTURES* – Backing-Up Independent Audio-Visual Cultures, Club Transmediale.09 presents projects that spring from the critical, interdisciplinary and experimental practice at the intersections of sound and other art forms. In recent years, a new breed of hybrid projects and initiatives that merges experimental audio and media cultures has developed in the convergence-zone between pop culture, science, arts and media technologies.

Digital’08: Imagination on Behalf of our Planet – deadline 10 August 2008

28 07 2008

10th International Digital Print Open Competition/Exhibition at the New York Hall of Science
October 4, 2008 – January 25, 2009
Organized by Art & Science Collaborations, Inc.

INTRODUCTION

What are the artists, designers, architects, scientists, and technologists of the twenty-first century thinking about our current environmental challenges? Can their artwork imagine new, positive approaches to sustaining life on Earth? Can it inspire us to confront the consequences of our current ways of living? Through the almost limitless possibilities of digital image technologies, we invite our competition entrants to examine their environmental concerns, indulge their fantasies, and then share their fabricated/montaged visions of how a sustainable future might look, which might include new types of hybrid forms: plants, animals, humans, cities, transportation systems, food, etc.
Let’s boldly envision on behalf of our planet!

Black or white screens for better energy efficiency?

24 07 2008

Fact or Fiction?: Black Is Better than White for Energy-Efficient Screens, by Larry Greenemeier (27 September 2007).

“In the meantime, the world is evenly split between CRT and LCD monitors, totaling roughly 405 million and 401 million respectively in 2007, according to iSuppli data. So if you’re still toiling away in front of a hefty CRT monitor that takes up three-quarters of your desk, then black screens will save you some energy. For those who’ve graduated to thinner LCD models, black screens are actually sucking up more energy then their white counterparts.”

A Generational Challenge

18 07 2008

“Scientists have confirmed that enough solar energy falls on the surface of the earth every 40 minutes to meet 100 percent of the entire world’s energy needs for a full year. Tapping just a small portion of this solar energy could provide all of the electricity America uses.

And enough wind power blows through the Midwest corridor every day to also meet 100 percent of US electricity demand. Geothermal energy, similarly, is capable of providing enormous supplies of electricity for America.”

FUTURESONIC 2009 ART STRAND
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A commission valued at GBP 5000 is available to create a new artwork, plus Futuresonic can support a limited number of other projects.
Each year Futuresonic’s Art strand commissions new artworks and presents exhibitions on art, technology and social themes, with a focus on artworks that are participatory, sited in public space, and in an urban context. Futuresonic is a space to critically explore the latest upgrade affecting today’s digital culture. The festival features art exhibitions, performances and interventions, including many world firsts – transforming the city into a space of experimentation, making it come alive.
2009 is the culmination of the Environment 2.0 project. Within the festival and throughout the year, Futuresonic will be exploring the Environment 2.0 theme, the interface between our digital footprint and our environmental footprint. Through Cracks In The Pavement is an exhibition featuring artworks that seek to inspire social change, and local innovations that enhance sustainability. Post-Car Futures is an exhibition exploring new mobilities from the wheel to wirelessness, and new ways of travelling and new ways to stay still.
